The 2019 Cricket World Cup captains were put in a difficult position on Thursday when they were asked which rival player they wish was part of their squads.

The ten best ODI teams on the planet will battle it out to win the 50-over World Cup this summer, with the action getting underway next week when hosts England face South Africa.

Each captain was present at the Cricket World Cup media day and were put on the spot by a schoolchild who asked which one rival player they would add to their own squads if given the opportunity.

While England’s Eoin Morgan, West Indies’ Jason Holder and Afghanistan’s Gulbadin Naib batted away the question, the other captains were happy to respond, with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler among the players named by the skippers.

Eoin Morgan (England)

I wouldn’t change anyone!

Virat Kohli (India)

That’s a very difficult question. We feel we’re such a strong side ourselves!

If I had to pick one guy I would have said AB de Villiers but he’s retired now… so I’ll go with Faf [du Plessis]. We’re good friends and I love batting with him.

Sarfaraz Ahmed (Pakistan)

I would go with Jos Buttler.

Jason Holder (West Indies)

I’m pretty happy with my squad…

Mashrafe Mortaza (Bangladesh)

Aaron Finch (Australia)

It’s a great question. I’d love to play with Kagiso Rabada, he provides so much with the ball. He’s a superstar.

Faf du Plessis (South Africa)

I think from the bowlers I’d pick Jasprit Bumrah, he’s very good. Rashid Khan is an exciting spinner. Virat as well.

Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka)

Ben Stokes. He is a game-changer, we know what he can do with bat and ball.

Kane Williamson (New Zealand)

The bowlers will play a big part in this tournament and Rashid Khan would be more than welcome in my side any time!

India captain Virat Kohli was asked specifically about Afghanistan spinner Rashid later in the press conference and said he is an ‘outstanding’ bowler who he relishes batting against.

‘I’ve seen him bowl for three years now,’ Kohli said. ‘I didn’t play against him this time [in the Indian Premier League] which was a pity, I wanted to.

‘He’s just outstanding. He doesn’t give you any time. Before you know it you’re bowled!

‘He brings that fast-bowler intensity with him. His attitude is outstanding and I wish him the best in the World Cup. He will be a big player for Afghanistan.’
