An urgent appeal has been launched after a convict was released from prison by mistake.
Officers are trying to find William Walter Johnson, 47, who is wanted for being ‘unlawfully at large’.
The 47-year-old was released ‘in error’ from HMP Hewell in Redditch, Worcestershire.
The Prison Service said mistakes like these are ‘very rare’ but are treated ‘extremely seriously’.
Johnson is described as being a white man of proportionate build with a shaven head.
Gloucestershire Constabulary and the Prison Service have not revealed what crime Johnson was originally convicted of.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: ‘Releases in error are very rare but we take them extremely seriously and are working closely with Gloucestershire police to bring the offender back into custody quickly.’
Johnson, from Evesham, Worcestershire, also has links to Hereford, Ledbury and Tewkesbury.
Police are asking for anyone who has information about his whereabouts to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary on 101 and quote incident 142 of 17 April.
