A construction crane fell onto Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas cruise ship in the Bahamas on Monday, damaging the ship. The company has canceled an upcoming cruise as a result.
A video tweeted by the Bahamian publication Bahamas Press shows the aftermath of the impact, which occurred in the Grand Bahama Shipyard.
The video’s narrator, who says he was on the dock where the incident occurred at the time of the crane’s collapse, suggests the dock was destroyed.
“All the cranes collapsed. Big, big, big, big, big, big disaster,” the narrator says.
Eight people suffered non-life-threatening injuries from the incident, a Royal Caribbean representative told Business Insider. No passengers were on the ship at the time of the incident, as the ship was undergoing maintenance.
“We are aware of damage to the dock structure and to construction cranes,” the Royal Caribbean representative said. “We are assessing damage to the ship.”
Royal Caribbean sent an email to guests announcing the cancellation. The message seen by Business Insider said, “we are forced to cancel our April 21st cruise, as we work to get the ship repaired.”
The company said it will provide full refunds to affected passengers, including “all pre-paid amenities, packages, and shore excursions.” Passengers who booked air travel through Royal Caribbean will receive full refunds as well. Those who booked airfare elsewhere will be reimbursed for flight-change fees up to $200 for domestic travel and up to $400 for international flights, the company said.
“Given this late cancellation, we will also provide you with a Future Cruise Credit valued at 100% of your cruise fare paid on your cancelled sailing,” Royal Caribbean told passengers.

“Yesterday, while undergoing repairs to the propulsion system in the Grand Bahama shipyard, there was an issue in the dry dock structure that caused considerable damage to the facility that will prevent us from completing the work on Oasis of the Seas. “Given the situation and our need to complete the scheduled maintenance, we now must reposition the ship to Cadiz, Spain which is the only facility with immediate availability for a ship her size. We are sad to share that as a result, we are forced to cancel our April 21st cruise, as we work to get the ship repaired.

Therefore, we’ll provide you with the following: You’ll receive a full refund to your original form of payment, including any non-refundable deposits by Monday, April 15th, 2019.
